Now, back then, Netflix would send you movies and shows in the mail. You held onto them until you were ready to send them back and get your next order. See, what people don’t tell you is that this was the model Netflix tried to sell to Blockbuster. It was only after Blockbuster turned them down that Netflix came up with the idea of streaming.

This new streaming platform slowed down piracy, and companies started to make money again. It was a win-win for all, for a while. Think about it, who didn’t have Netflix back then? That is, until Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, got greedy and changed the way we all stream today. Bob, don’t get bored with it, get paid with it.

Instead of just licensing Disney's content to Netflix and getting paid, the CEO got bored and decided to be the first to pull its content from Netflix and start its own app. So, instead of sitting back and letting the fat checks come in, he decided to waste a ton of money to copy what Netflix was doing. The problem was that every other company started to follow suit.

This left Netflix with a huge licensing problem. No one wanted to license anymore; companies wanted all the money for themselves. See, greed can only take you so far before it destroys you. Now, Netflix had to solve its new problem: they needed exclusive content. This is why you see one movie on Netflix and then the sequel on HBO Max, and the show you want is exclusive to a service in another country, making a VPN necessary.
